Acupuncture
I first came to acupuncture in my 20’s as a patient with significant chronic knee pain. Acupuncture gave me great relief before, during and after multiple surgeries. Now in my own practice, I help clients not only with pain, but with a wide range of diagnoses and concerns: arthritis, migraines, digestion issues, reproductive issues, insomnia, depression, neurological disorders, addiction and more.
Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other TCM modalities work hand-in-hand with Western medicine to bring balance and health to the body. I continually take classes and workshops, and educate myself on new developments and research in TCM theory and practice so that I can better serve my clients in their pursuit of good health.
I hold a dual Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and Chinese Herbal Medicine from New England School of Acupuncture at MCPHS. I am licensed to practice acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
I’m the father of 2 grown sons, a musician and an artist. I love the natural beauty and creative community on the Cape, and feel grateful to call it home.
Patient Testimonials
"I highly recommend Dr. Andrew Payne. I have gone to a few other acupuncturists in RI before for lower back/hip pain with little success. I felt like they were just going through the motions. Dr. Andy really focuses in on your specific issues and uses a variety of techniques to address them. I had a recent flair up and felt 80% better after my first treatment and the flair up was gone after the second. I have never had so much success with any treatment. He also has a calming, caring and relaxing presence. I am so happy to have found him!" - Amy Haigh
"I've seen Dr. Payne elsewhere and I would highly recommend his services. I went in with pain in my back and I walked out without pain for a few weeks. Amazing." - Theresa Larsen
"Today was my first ever experience with Accupuncture, suffering with some lower back pain i decided to try it out and I will report that im glad I did. Dr Andy was friendly, compassionate and very helpful and he was more than happy to explain everything he was doing seeing as how it was my first experience with this type of treatment." - John Shadoian
"I highly recommend Dr. Payne--especially when you discover that Western medicine is not helping address your medical issues. Last fall I had a major surgery to remove a portion of my intestines. After surgery I had difficulties with pain and digestion that were not resolved with medication. I went to Dr. Payne to try acupuncture--and it was a grand success! Dr. Payne is gentle, thoughtful, kind, patient and most of all skilled. He has taken the time to research best acupuncture points for my symptoms--and tried various combinations to effectively treat them. Thanks to treatments with Andy--I am finally eating again-and not in pain." - Wendy Surr
"I have had acupuncture in several different states and over the course of many years, and Dr. Sara Ryan and Andrew Payne are by far the best. I suffer from vertigo and nerve pain (amongst other symptoms due to a chronic illness) and both Sara and Andy's treatments allow me to continue to work full time and live alone. Both are incredibly kind and caring people and masters of their crafts." - Monica Ward
"Every time I see Dr. Andy I feel so much better walking out than when I walked in. I have a bad back and a lot of body pain and Andy fixes me right up so I feel like a million bucks after. And it lasts, which is something I don't experience with other wellness doctors. Not sure how he does it but he's magic!" - David E. Atkins
"Dr. Payne is an incredible acupuncture practitioner! From the very first session, he understood and identified the underlying pain trauma in my back and created a tailored approach to allow me to heal. I vividly remember emerging from the first full session overwhelmed with emotion and free of pain that had been impacting me for over 10 years. Aside from the treatments, Dr. Payne was also very conscious of following up with me to make sure I retained healthy habits and continued to improve my wellbeing. I would absolutely recommend his services!" - Ray Nuñez
FAQs
Q. What does acupuncture treat?
A. The list is long, so ask us if you don't see your particular concern listed.
Pain: Neck, back and joint pain; chronic pain from conditions such as fibromyalgia, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis, as well as acute pain from injury or surgery. It helps with migraines and tension headaches, and Myofascial pain.
Other conditions: anxiety, insomnia, asthma, sinus infections, skin conditions like eczema, Bell's Palsy, fertility issues for men and women, symptoms from menopause and PMS, symptoms of and recovery from tick-borne illness, addiction, side effects from cancer treatment, nausea, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, hepatitis, hemorrhoids.
Q. Does acupuncture hurt?
A. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, sterilized and single-use. Most of the time you won't feel anything when needles are inserted. Sometimes you will feel a pinch or twinge, but any discomfort should disappate quickly. Once all the needles are in place, you can expect to feel pleasantly calm and relaxed, in fact you might just fall asleep (we encourage it).
Q. Do you accept insurance?
A. We can generate a superbill which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, however you will need to confirm coverage/limits with your insurance provider. Payment is due in full at the time of treatment. We prefer online payments through our scheduling portal. We also accept HSA payments and personal checks.
Q. Which modalities will be used during my treatment?
A. Most people receive Acupuncture, either alone or in combination with Moxabustion (Ontake), heat lamps, tui na (bodywork). The modalities we use will be the ones most effective in treating your health concerns. Chinese Herbal Medicine can be used alone or in a complimentary manner with other modalities.
Q. How many treatments will I need?
A. This depends on your individual health concern. Some situations only require one or two visits and some require a longer term treatment plan. If you are coming in for a headache or to ease cold symptoms, your course of treatment will be shorter. If you are seeing us for a chronic condition or injury, you will be more likely to require once or twice weekly appointments over a sustained period of time - weeks to months. In most cases, the results are longer lasting and benefit the whole body when incorporated into a regular health-care regimen.
Q. How should I prepare for my appointment?
A. Make sure you are well hydrated, and have had a light meal or snack before your appointment. Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows access to your arms to above the elbow, and legs to above the knee.
Q. What about after care?
A. Some patients report feeling tired after, others feel energized, some feel their emotions close to the surface. Tune into how you're feeling and give yourself time to rest if needed. Drink plenty of water after your appointment. If you are being treated for pain, it may take a day before you start to feel a difference, so be patient with your symptoms. For some people, symptoms may worsen a bit post-treatment before improving. This is considered a healing crisis and should only be temporary. Patients who report the best results are those who take care of their health generally - eating right, getting enough sleep and water, and getting regular exercise to your ability will all help.
